1. John Pilling, b. c. 1790 in Culcheth, Lancashire, Eng, resided in Warrington, Lancashire, Eng, occupation carter;.

John’s birth year is uncertain, since in 1851 he is listed as 56 with a birthyear of 1794, in 1861 he is 70 with a birth year of 1791 and in 1871 he is listed as 83 with a birthyear of 1787.

In 1841, the family was living in Stockton Heath (Appleton) . In 1851, the family was living on Battersby Lane, in Warrington. John was listed as a “Carter”. In 1861, the family was living in Stockton Heath (Appleton). Only Esther, Abigail and Sarah were still living home. In 1861, John’s birthplace is listed as “Risley”. In 1871, Son, Jonathan is unmarried and living with parents. Daughter, Esther, her husband and child were also living there.

He married Esther Johnson, married 15 Jun 1824 in Warrington, Lancashire, Eng, b. c. 1801 in Culcheth, Lancashire, Eng.

Esther: John and Esther were married by banns. Elizabeth Whittaker and William Webster were witnesses. In 1861, Esther is listed as a “fruiterer”, which her daughter, Rebecca, is later listed as. In 1861, Esther’s birthplace is listed as “Risley”.

Ann was not living with her parents in 1851. She would have been 21, probably married.

iii Jonathan Pilling, b. c. 1831 in Kenyon, Lancashire, Eng.

In 1871, Jonathan was age 40, living with his parents and working as a carter.

iv Rebecca Pilling, b. c. 1833 in Crowley, Lancashire, Eng,, occupation Fruiterer, resided in Warrington, Lancashire, Eng.

Could not find her baptism record in Great Budworth(Crowley) Parish Records.

In 1861, Rebecca and William lived on Crosby St, Warrington. They had one 14 yr. old boy working for them.

In 1871, they were at same address, with a 17 yr old and 15 yr old boy working for them. Rebecca and William do not seem to have had children.

In 1881, Rebecca was widowed. Her widowed sister, Margaret, was living with her. Rebecca was listed as a “fruiterer”. In 1901, Rebecca’s brother, Joseph, and his wife were living with her. She also had nephews, William Longshaw, age 26, and John James Lowe, age 13, living with her. I think that John James may actually be John Jame Longshaw, son of Rebecca’s sister Abigail. In 1881, Rebecca’s birthplace is listed as Stockton Heath. In 1901, it’s listed as Antrobus.

She married William Locker, b. c. 1833, d. pre 1881, occupation Green Grocer.

William: In 1861, the family lived on Crosby St. in Warrington and had one 14 yr. old boy working for them. In 1871, They had two teenage boys working for them.

William was not listed with family in 1851, he would have been age 15.

In 1881, Margaret is widowed and living with her sister, Rebecca, in Warrington.

She married Samuel Ratcliffe, married 1848 in Warrington, Lancashire, Eng, b. 1824 in Stretton, Cheshire, Eng, (son of Thomas Ratcliffe and Betty ?? Ratcliffe) d. post 1869 in England, occupation Laborer, Fireman; Bank Inspector.

Samuel: In 1850, the family was living in Lower Walton in the Parish of Stockton Heath, Cheshire. In 1871, the family was living at Bates Bridge in Halton, Cheshire. In 1875, the family is listed as living on Halton Lane, Halton in the parish registers. Samuel was listed as a Bank Inspector on his son, Thomas’, wedding record. Samuel is said to have died in the River Mersey. There is a death record for a Samuel Ratcliffe, died age 50 during 1st quarter 1875 in Runcorn. This could be this Samuel. The dates fit.

In 1881, Joseph was living with wife, Clara at 45 King St., Warrington. Joseph’s nephew, John Pilling, age 15, Was living with them.

In 1891, Joseph was “widowed”, and living on Antrobus St., Warrington.

In 1901, Joseph and his third wife, were living with sister, Rebecca, on Mill St. in Warrington.

He married (1) Elizabeth Pilling, b. c. 1838 in Lancashire, Eng.

He married (2) Clara ?? Pilling, b. c. 1851 in Brentwood, Essex, Eng, occupation Green Grocer.

Could not find her baptism record in Great Budworth (Appleton) Parish Records.

Esther seems to have had two children as a “single woman” before her marriage to Samuel. We have no way of knowing if Samuel was the father of these two children, however, it seems that if he was they probably would have gone by “Booker” after Samuel and Esther’s marriage.

Samuel and Esther were married “by Banns”. The witnesses were William Locker and Abigail Longshaw.

She married (1) Unknown.

In 1881, John is living with his uncle Joseph.

ii William Halton Pilling, b. c. 1868 in Stockton Heath, Cheshire, Eng.

This child probably died young as there are no other records of him.

She married (2) Samuel Booker, married 9 Jan 1871 in Stockton Heath, Cheshire, Eng, b. c. 1836 in Crew, Cheshire, Eng, occupation Carter.

Samuel: According to marriage record, Samuel’s father’s name was George. He was a laborer.

In 1871, Samuel and wife, Esther, were living with Esther’s parents.

iii Martha Booker, b. c. 1871 in Stockton Heath, Lancashire, Eng.

Martha was 3 weeks old at the time of the 1871 Census.

5. Abigail Pilling, (1.John1) b. c. 1847 in Appleton, Lancashire, Eng.,

Abigail and James were married “by banns”.

She married James Longshaw, married 8 Jun 1863 in Stockton Heath, Cheshire, Eng, b. c. 1843 in Crowton, Lancashire, Eng, occupation Laborer; Fruiterer; Green Grocer.,,

James: According to marriage record, James’ father’s name was James. He was a laborer. James was from “Lower Watlton” at the time of his marriage.

In 1871, the family lived on Crossley St. in Warrington.

In 1881, the family lived next door to Abigail’s sisters Rebecca (Locker) and Margaret (Ratcliffe). James’ brother, Arthur, age 15 and a niece, Eliz. A. Briggs, age 12, were living with the family.

In 1891, the family lived on Make St. in Warrington. A “grandson”, John James Longshaw, age 2, lived with them.

i John James Longshaw, b. c. 1864 in Warrington, Lancashire, Eng,, occupation Green Grocer, resided 44 Cambrie Place in Warrington, Lancashire, Eng.

In 1891 and 1901, John and Agnes were living in Warrington, where John was working as a Green Grocer. In 1901, they lived at 13 Back Providence Place off Lythgoe Lane. John and Agnes do not seem to have had children.

He married Agnes ?? Longshaw, b. c. 1864 in Warrington, Lancashire, Eng.

In 1871, she is listed as Margaret Hannah, In 1881, as Margaret, and in 1891 as M. Hannah.

Sarah and Thomas were married in 1866. They were married by banns and the witnesses were James Longshaw and Mary Wittens.

Sarah was only 19. By the age of 23 she was a widow working as a green grocer living with her young daughter.

By 1875 she was remarried and had another child. In 1891 she was 43 and a widow again. In 1901 only her son John was living with her. She was still working as a green grocer.

She married (1) Thomas Massey, married 4 Nov 1866 in Stockton Heath, Cheshire, Eng, b. c. 1847, d. pre 1871, occupation Wire Drawer.

Thomas: According to the marriage record, Thomas’s father was John Massey, a shoemaker.

Children:

i Esther Massey, b. 1868 in Stockton Heath, Cheshire, Eng, occupation shopgirl.

In 1891, Esther was still single, age 23 and living with her mother.

ii Margaret Massey, b. 1870 in Stockton Heath, Cheshire, Eng, d. pre 1871.

Margaret probably died young. She is not living with Esther and Sarah in 1871.

She married (2) Charles Clifton, b. c. 1855 in Liverpool, Lancashire, Eng, d. pre 1891, occupation Green Grocer.

Children:

iii Elizabeth Clifton, b. c. 1875 in Warrington, Lancashire, Eng, d. in Warrington, Lancashire, Eng.

Elizabeth was not listed with the family in 1881. She must have been visiting someone. She was living with mother in 1891. She was 16.
