In Spring of 1855 he moved to Mitchell Co., IA settling in Eureka, later known as West Mitchell. He built the first frame house in the Village of Mitchell.
Thomas experimented with horticultural interests and fruit growing and was quite successful. He was prominently identified with agricultural interests in the county and state. He set out the first orchard in the county to show that fruit could be grown in the area.
In 1911, after the death of his wife, Thomas moved to West Seattle, WA to live with his son, Alonzo.

Murray, b. 1848, Prince Edward Island, Canada, d. 31 Dec 1916. Alonzo. died Seattle, WA, Seattle, WA.
Alonzo’s military records say that he was 18 years old when he enlisted in the 3rd Iowa Infantry, Co. 1 on Dec 6, 1861. He apparently lied about his age to get in because his recorded birthdate would make him almost 17. The Iowa 3rd was raised, drilled and sent to the front about Aug. 1, 1861. They fought at Shiloh where Alonzo’s brother, Edward, was wounded and taken prisoner. The Iowa 3rd continued to fight at Metamora and Vicksburg. At Johnson, MI they lost 114 killed, wounded and missing. Alonzo was among the missing. He was later confirmed a prisoner and supposedly spent time at Libby Prison. The Iowa 3rd was reorganized and Alonzo was mustered out on Dec. 14, 1864.
Alonzo was active in agrarian protest movements. In 1901, he attended a cooperative congress in England where he became impressed with the Rockdale Cooperatives. He became a Rockdale oranizer in the midwestern and other states and was referred to as the “Father of Cooperation” by a Wisconsin newspaper. He toured the Pacific Northwest in this capacity in 1903.
