Stanfords of Mohill, Leitrim and New Haven, CT

*8 Nov ’07: note: I am in the process of some major updates to this information… I will be uploading the new revised info soon

Generation One

1. James1 Stanford, resided in Mohill, Leitrim, Ireland.

Chances are that this is also the father of Mary Stanford Carroll. Family was probably from County Leitrim, as Mary married Bartholomew Carroll of Mohill,County Leitrim in Ireland before they came to US. It seems that there is definitely a connection between Mary, Thomas, Peter and Patrick. If they are siblings, this would make Mary b.circa 1822 atleast 7 years older than Patrick. There is a James Stanford listed in the Tithe Applotments in Cornee, Mohill, Co. Leitrim.

He married Unknown, resided in Ireland.

Children:

2. i. Peter2 Stanford b. C.1830.

3. ii. Patrick Stanford b. c.1832.

iii. James Stanford, b. c. 1832 in Mohill, Leitrim, Ireland.

In 1860, James lived in same house as Patrick and Elizabeth.

4. iv. Thomas G. Stanford b. c. 1830.

Generation Two

2. Peter2 Stanford, (James1) b. C.1830 in Mohill, Leitrim, Ireland, d. 21 Feb 1874 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, buried St. Bernard’s in New Haven, New Haven, CT, resided Lafayette St. in New Haven, New Haven, CT, occupation Laborer.

I think that this could be the nephew of Mary Stanford Carroll. At his death, Peter named Mary’s husband, Bartholomew Carroll, and Thomas Stanford, possibly another brother, as his executors of his will. In 1860, a Thomas and Peter lived with a Patrick Stanford, a third brother, Thomas, at 45 Morrocco St. All three were born in Ireland. In 1860, Mary was already married and livng in New Haven. Peter died of Pertusis, attending physician was Dr. J.J.S. Doherty. (NH Vitals) Vitals list father as “James”.

He married Mary Doherty, b. c.1840 in Ireland, resided Lafayette St. in New Haven, New Haven, CT, d. post 1880.

Mary: In 1880, Mary was living with her “brother”(in law?) Thomas Stanford and his wife Bridget. At the time of Peter’s death, the only one of their children alive was son Peter. None of their seven daughters lived past age 6. All but one died under age 1. (Hale Headstones) A Dr. J.J. S. Doherty is listed as a relative in Anne Carroll’s obit. In 1860 City Directories, there is a Charles Doherty boarding with this family at 45 Morroco St. Is probably Mary’s brother.
