Stanfords of Ireland and New Haven, CT

Generation One

1. James1 Stanford, b. in Ireland, occupation grocer?.

All that I know for sure is that Edward J. Stanford's father's name was "James" and that his mother was Susan Mason Stanford. Susan is buried in New Haven. There is no proof that James was ever in the US. The following is info on one possible "James Stanford" in New Haven:

In the 1853-54 City Directories for New Haven, CT, thereis James Stanford listed as a "grocer". This would make sense as Edward J. is later listed as a "grocer" after he came back from the war. In 1853-54 there is also a Thomas, laborer, listed at the same 29 Morrocco St. address. The New Haven City Directories show listings for over 50 Stanfords from 1852-1867 on Morrocco St. alone!

1853 is the first and only year that James is listed. The earliest Stanfords in New Haven are as follows: 1851-Andrew, laborer, h. 30 Fleet St.; Thomas, laborer, 20 Factory st. 1852-53- Andrew, laborer, h. 30 Fleet St.; Thomas, laborer, h. 14 Morocco St. 1853-54 - Andrew(same); James, grocer, h. 29 Morrocco St.; Thomas, laborer, h. 29 Morrocco St.; Thomas, gardener, h. 22 Wooster St.; Thomas, carpenter, h. East C. Collis.

It is not certain that Edward J.'s father, James, ever came to the US or lived in New Haven. We have no death or burial records. His wife is buried in New Haven, but she may have come to US after his death. Family may have settled in Ohio or West Virginia where Edward J. was prior to the war. The fact that Edward J. settled in New Haven after the war leads me to believe that he had family there.

He married Susan Mason, b. 1795 in Ireland, (daughter of James Mason and unknown) d. 1879 in New Haven,CT, buried in New Haven,CT.

Susan: New Haven Vitals list a widow, Susan Stanford, d. 23 Dec 1979, in the "Alms House". She was 65 years old and born in Ireland. Could this be this Susan?

Children:

2. i. Peter2 Stanford b. Oct 1829.

ii. Daughter Stanford.

Aunt Lillian says that she "married a Bullock or Buckley, son of a Congregational minister." She could be "Jane Bullock" b. 1831 in Ireland, married to John Bullock, b.1829 in NY. Children: Esther b1853, Mary J. b.1858, John H. b. 1860,Susan b.1862, Benjamin b. 1866, Alfred b. 1868. Names Mary J. and Susan match names that Edward J. named his children.

3. iii. Edward J. Stanford b. C.1834.

Generation Two

2. Peter2 Stanford, (James1) b. Oct 1829 in Ireland, d. 27 Feb 1914 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, buried in New Haven, New Haven, CT, resided 560 Congress Av in New Haven, New Haven, CT, occupation Freightman NYRR.

City Directories show a Mrs. Susan Stanford living with this family from 1869-1874. This could be Peter's mother, validating my assumption that this Peter is the brother of Edward J. Stanford, son of Susan Mason and Peter (Edward) Stanford. There is no record of Susan's husband being in the US. Perhaps Susan came to US after his death. Peter's wife Bridget's maiden name is also Stanford.(New Haven Vitals) NH Vitals list a Mary A.,dau of Peter and Bridget, as being born 3 Jul 1859. In 1910, Peter is living with his widowed daughter, Jane Mcguiness, and a grandson, Peter Jr.

He married Bridget Stanford, married 8 June 1856 in New Haven, CT by Rev. E.J. O'Brien, b. c. 1835 in Ireland, d. 1898 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, buried in New Haven, New Haven, CT.

City Directory for 1904 lists Edward as a "clerk at 52 George St., boarding at his parents home on Congress Ave. In 1906, he was boarding at 11 Baldwin. In 1925, he was employed by L.C. Bates Co. and lived at 160 State St. No wife is listed. In 1930, he is listed as a "clerk" boarding at 160 State St.

City Directories for 1904-6 list Jennie as a dressmaker who worked out of her parents home. In 1910, Jane is listed as a "widow" living with her father and nephew, She can't have been married for very long since she was single in 1906.

She married Mr. McGuiness, married c. 1907 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, d. pre 1910.

iv. Catherine "Katie" Stanford, b. 5 Jul 1869 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, d. Feb 1937 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, buried St. Bernard's in New Haven, New Haven, CT, resided 560 Congress Av in New Haven, New Haven, CT.

New Haven Vitals list Catherine, dau. of Peter and Bridget, as being born 5 Jul 1869. This doesn't match with Census. Headstone says 1870.

v. Mary A. Stanford, b. 3 Jul 1859 in New Haven, New Haven, CT.

3. Edward J.2 Stanford, (James1) b. C.1834 in Ireland, d. 24 Nov 1909 in New Haven,CT, buried St. Bernard's in New Haven, New Haven, CT, resided 482 Howard Ave in New Haven,CT,1 occupation "Huckster", Grocer.3

Edward J. came to America circa 1848 and was naturalized on 9 Mar 1867 in New Haven, CT.

Before settling in New Haven, Edward went to work in the coal mines in Lewisburg, WV. (Still apart of Virginia at that time) In the 1860 Census Edward is listed in what seems to be a boarding house in Lewisburg, Greenbriar Co., WV. He is listed as a "day laborer". Family notes say that at some time Edward lived in Eaton, OH. I would guess that this was prior to going to WV as he joined the Union Army in Lewisburg and settled in New Haven right after the war.

When the Civil War broke out, Edward joined the Union Army. He was a Corporal in Co. F of the 1st WV Mounted Volunteers. He enlisted on 19 Aug 1861 for 3 years. He was discharged 17 Jan 1864, reinlisted and was mustered out on 8 Jul 1865. While in service, he fought under Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley and was severely wounded by a saber thrust in the Battle of Winchester. He fought in the Battle of Bull Run on 29 Aug 1862.

When Edward first shows up in the New Haven City Directories in 1866, he is listed as a "laborer" living on Lafayette Place. The next year he is listed as a "grocer" at Morrocco Ave. and living at 17 Dow St. In 1869, both his store and home were on Lafayette Place. In 1880, the family was living at 17 Minor St, and Edward was working at the Pork Packing Plant.

According to military records, Edward was 5ft. 8in. tall, weighed 130 pounds, had grey

eyes and auburn hair, and a light complexion. His death lists the cause of death as paresis.

In his obituary, pall bearers are listed as "relatives": Dr. J.J.S. Doherty, Edward Stanford, Atty. Edward Stanford,, Charles Havey, Thomas McAveney and James Burke.

He married Anne Carroll, married 19 Aug 1865 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, b. c.1841 in Mohill, Co. Leitrim,Ireland, (daughter of Bartholomew Carroll and Mary Stanford) baptized 14 Jan 1841 in Mohill, Co. Leitrim, Ireland, d. 22 Jan 1913 in New Haven, New Haven, CT, buried St. Bernard's in New Haven, New Haven, CT, resided 115 Gilbert Ave in New Haven,CT, occupation Housewife.

Anne: In 1910, Anne was living at 796 Howard Ave with 4 of her unmarried children. Lived in two family house at 115 Gilbert Ave ( 2nd Ward) at time of her death. According to Mohill Parish Records, Anne's godparents were Thomas Byrne and Marguarita Stanford. Anne's birthdate is listed as c. 1846 on her death certificate. Informant on death certificate was daughter, Anna. Marriage performed by Rev. Hugh Connolly. She's listed as 26 in 1870 Census so I am guessing, however Mohill baptism records say 1841.

Annie never married. Is probably the "Anna" on 1870 Census. CT Death Records on Ancestry.com list death date as 3 Dec 1953, in Meriden, CT. This coincides with fact that Annie was living with sister, Susan, at time of her death. Annie was living with her Susan during 1930 Census. 6. v. Edward F. Stanford b. 23 Mar 1873.
