Notes: While I am confident of the children and grandchildreon of this Daniel, I am not sure if William, the son of Daniel Jr and his first wife, Jane Shepherd, is my ancestor. There are notes below under William’s listing. You can click here to go directly to :Notes on William’s parentage and my DNA match
I did post a page for the descendants of my William Keen on another page here:William Keen of Broughton Gifford
Generation One
1. Daniel1 Keen Sr.
The only information that I have on Daniel and his wife, Ann, are as being parents in baptism records.
Early Keens in Broughton Gifford, and possible siblings of Daniel are:
• Thomas Keen m. Elizabeth Betty Marsh. Children born 1718-1726; Thomas buried in 1729
• John Keen m. Frances Gerrish in 1718. Frances died in 1721. John married Rachel c. 1726
• Edward Keen m. Elizabeth Elmes in 1721 – one son William
• Ann Keen m. William Wakely in 1726.
He married Ann (maiden name unknown) Keen.
There is a burial for a Daniel Keen in Broughton Gifford on 2 Dec 1740. It can’t be his son, Daniel Jr., as that Daniel and his second wife, Miriam, had children after 1740.
Children:
2. i. Daniel2 Keen Jr. b. 1695.
ii. John Keen, b. 1692 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 17 Apr 1692 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.

Probable twin of Sarah who died young.

Probable twin of Martha. Sarah was just about a month old at the time of her death.
Generation Two
2. Daniel2 Keen Jr. (Daniel1), b. 1695 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 26 Dec 1695 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, resided in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
He is listed as Daniel Keen Jr on his second marriage record.
I descend from a William Keen who I believe is Daniel’s son, William, with his first wife, Jane Shepard.
I have a DNA match with a descendant of a son of Thomas Keen and Ann Gay. I believe that Thomas was the son of Hammond Keen, Daniel’s son with his second wife, Miriam Hammond. See notes below.
Deed:
(1) Horton, Thomas, of Wootton, co. Gloucs, esquire
(2) Keen, Daniel, junior, yeoman.
Counterpart of Lease for 500 years of a messuage and garden in Broughton Marsh. Date: 1734 August 24.
Daniel married (1) Jane Shepard, 28 Dec 1716 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, b. 1692 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England (daughter of John Shepherd and Joane Jane (maiden name?) Shepherd), baptized 14 Mar 1692 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, d. 1726 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, buried 10 Jun 1726 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
Jane’s parents both died within a month of each other in summer 1698 when Jane was only about 6 years old.
Children:
i. Ann3 Keen b. 1717 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 30 Nov 1717 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.

iv. John Keen b. 1722 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, d. 1722 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, buried 11 Nov 1722 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
His burial record didn’t list age, only “son of Daniel”.
Daniel Jr Keen married (2) Miriam Hammond, 8 Nov 1729 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, b. c. 1705.
Children:
4. v. Hammond Keen b. 1732.
vi. Jane Keen b. 1735 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 14 Aug 1735 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
vii. Thomas Keen b. 1738 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 26 Mar 1738 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, d. 1739 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, buried 17 Jan 1739 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
viii. Sarah Keen b. 1745 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 29 Sep 1745 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.

Generation Three
3. William3 Keen Sr (Daniel2, Daniel1), b. 1722 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 2 Sep 1722 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, resided in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
There was also a William Keen, son of Edward and Elizabeth (Emmst?) baptized on 20 Aug 1721. Edward may be a sibling of Daniel Keen Senior.
He married Catherine Fox, 31 Oct 1742 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
Children:
i. Esther4 Keen b. 1747 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 20 Aug 1747 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
ii. Isaac Long Keen b. 1751 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, d. 1751 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, buried 17 Jan 1751 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
iii. William Keen Jr. b. 1745 in Wiltshire, England, baptized 4 Aug 1745 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, resided in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
I thought that the key to this being William who married Betty Brown’s family was that William and Catherine Fox had a son with the middle name of Long. Two of William and Betty’s grandchildren, my Great Great Grandmother Dorothy Long Keen and her sister, had the middle name Long. However, I found that the Long name was used as middle name in family of William and Betty’s daughter in law, Sarah Bryant Keen so the name may have been handed down from both families.
At the time of their marriage, both William and Betty were “of Broughton Gifford”
There is a burial for a William Keen in 1791 in Broughton Gifford.
I have a DNA match with a descendant of a Samuel Keen born 1805 in Broughton Gifford. He was the son of Thomas Keen and Ann Gay. This was a second marriage for both Thomas and Ann. Samuel had one other full brother, Thomas Keen bp 1803.
The person who I match with has Thomas’ parents as Benjamin and Mary King Keen in their tree on Ancestry. However, the son of Benjamin and Mary was born c. 1790 which would have meant that Thomas only about 16 at the time of Sam’s birth and age 13 at the time of son Thomas Jr’s birth. He would have been even younger at the time of his first marriage. While “young” marriages were common in this area of Wiltshire, I believe Thomas would have been too young even by Wiltshire standards.
I am not sure who Thomas’ parents are yet. There are a few options. I also don’t know how far back we connect. The best option is that Thomas’ father and my William were half siblings. There is a Thomas Keen bp 1759, son of Hammond and Mary Bull. Hammond was the son of Daniel and his second wife, Miriam Hammond. William being the son of Daniel and his first wife, Jane Shepherd. There are no other Thomas Keens baptized in Broughton Gifford between the son of Hammond, and the son of Benjamin in 1790. With the son of Hammond being the best option (birth year wise) for father of Samuel, and me having DNA match with descendant of Samuel, that makes me fairly confident that my William is the son of Daniel and Jane Shepherd. I’m hoping future DNA matches will confirm this.
If my William is not the son of Daniel, there are other William’s that are possible as my ancestor who married Betty Brown on 1 Sep 1768. . One possibility is William Keen Jr., baptized 1 Oct 1732, the son of William Keen and Margaret Chapman. Another option is William Keen baptized 20 Jan 1744/45, the son of Edward Keen and his wife, Sarah House.
My ancestor, William, married Betty Brown, 1 Sep 1768 in Broughton Gifford. The son of Daniel would have been about 23 years old at the time of this marriage. That age fits with common age at marriage pattern in Wiltshire.
4. Hammond3 Keen (Daniel2, Daniel1), b. 1732 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 14 Aug 1732 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, d. 1788 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, buried 23 Dec 1788 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, resided in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
At the time of Hammond and Mary’s marriage, they were both “otp” (Broughton Gifford).
He married Mary Bull, 27 Feb 1753 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
Children:
i. John Hammond4 Keen b. 1756 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 11 Jan 1756 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, resided in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
He was listed as “John Keen” in baptism record, however, he was listed as “John Hammond Keen” on his marriage record.
He married (1) Elizabeth “Betty” Rudman, 9 May 1773 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, d. c. 1776 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
He married (2) Elizabeth “Betty” West, 10 Aug 1777 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
ii. Thomas Keen b. 1759 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 14 Jan 1759 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
See notes above: I believe that he is the Thomas Keen who married Mary Merret on 4 July 1792 in Broughton Gifford. They had three children: Phillip Morgan Keen (1) b. 1794, buried 6 Oct 1794, Phillip Morgan Keen bp 21 Jun 1795. He married Isabella, lived in BG. And Ann bp 17 June 1798. Mary Merret Keen was buried 12 May 1801. Thomas married second Ann Collet Gay , widow, on 6 Sep 1802 in Broughton Gifford. They had sons Thomas Keen bp 9 Apr 1803 and Samuel bp 25 Dec 1805. I have DNA match with a descendant of Samuel.
iii. William Keen b. 1761 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 14 May 1761 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
iv. Mary Keen b. 1763 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 24 Jul 1763 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
v. James Keen b. 1765 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 24 Nov 1765 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, d. 1783 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, buried 16 Dec 1783 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
James died at age 18 years. He was listed as “pauper”
vi. Daniel Keen b. 1767 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England, baptized 20 Dec 1767 in Broughton Gifford, Wiltshire, England.
