John Morgan of “Moor Corner”

*Note: Updated Information. I used to have the children of John and Sarah split in to two families. I have now combined them

Generation One

1. John “of Moor Corner”1 Morgan, b. c. 1730 in Reynoldston, Glamorgan, Wales, baptized 1730 in Reynoldston, Glamorgan, Wales, d. 1811 in Portyenon, Glamorgan, Wales, buried 17 Jun 1811 in Portyenon, Glamorgan, Wales, resided Moor Corner in Porteynon, Glamorgan, Wales.

I recently discovered a very good bet for John’s baptism. John Morgan, son of William, was baptised in 1730 (no date) in Reynoldston, Glamorgan. Reynoldston makes sense as a location, especially since John married Sarah Gammon and the Gammons were mostly from the Scurlage area. John and Sarah named multiple sons William which makes sense if that was his father’s name. Also, in the early 1800’s, John and Sarah’s son William was living in Reynoldston. John Morgan of Reynoldston’s siblings were Anne Morgan bp 1728 and Elinor Morgan, bp 1733.

Early Morgans listed in Porteynon parish registers include burial for Sagea Moran buried 5 May 1696. There is a burial for Anne relict of Rowland Morgan who was buried 11 Nov 1748. I had thought that Anne and Rowland were possible parents of John.

There is a burial for a Morgan Morgan, son of John, 8 Jul 1749, Porteynon. But that is too early for this family.
There is a burial for Sarah Morgan 23 Oct 1768. Could be daughter, first one named Sarah.

There is a marriage for William Morgan and Margaret Hoskin, both of Porteynon, married by Banns on 28 Oct 1781.

John Morgan married Sarah Gammon, 15 Mar 1757 in Porteynon, Glamorgan, Wales, b. 1714 in Porteynon, Glamorgan, Wales. Sarah: There is a burial record for a Sarah Morgan on 25 Apr 1812 in Penrice. Sarah may have been staying with her son, William of Penrice”.

** Update: In 1841, there is a William and Elizabeth (b. 1815) Grove and children living at Moor Corner in Porteynon. I found the baptism for that Elizabeth Clark in Penrice. That means that “Mrs. Grove” is not this Elizabeth Morgan.
