Descendents of William Kieft of Devon, England
Generation One
1. William1 Kieft, b. c. 1715 in Westliegh, Devon, England, resided in Woolacombe, Devon, England, d. 19 Jun 1770 in Westliegh, Devon, Eng.
He married Mary ?? Kieft, d. 2 Mar 1778 in Westleigh, Devon, Eng.
Mary: According to Tim Thorne of Barnstaple, there is a will listed in Barnstaple Wills 1563-1858 ( These were destroyed during WWII), for a Mary Kift of Fremington. It is dated 12th mar 1778. This could be this Mary.
Children:
i. William2 Kieft, b. 5 Sep 1738 in Woolacombe, Devon, England.,
2. ii. George Kieft b. 24 Feb 1742.
3. iii. Thomas Kieft b. 7 Feb 1744.
iv. John Kieft, b. 25 Feb 1749 in Woolacombe, Devon, England.
v. Rebecca Kieft, b. c. 1750, d. 06 Jan 1803 in Westleigh, Devon, England, resided in Instow, Devon, England.
Tim Thorne of Barnstaple states the following from Land Indenture Records in Fremington: “This indenture of three parts made the eighth day of July in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eight. Between George Kieft of the parish of Braunton in the county of Devon, yeoman, (eldest brother and Heir at Law of Rebecca Short, late of Instow in the same county. Widow deceased intestate which said Rebecca Short ws the usiduary Devisee in Fee named in the last will and testament in writing of John Short, late of Instow, aforesaid yeoman deceased which said John Short was a Devisee in Fee in respect of the close of the land called Vella (?) hereinafter described named in the last will and testament in writing of Richard Eveans heretofore of the parish of Fremington in the said county, yeoman deceased which said Richard Evans was the son and heir at Law of John Evans formerly of the Parish of Fremington, aforesaid yeoman deceased and Mary, the wife of the aforesaid George Kieft of the first part”.
This would prove the marriage of Rebecca Kieft and John Short. It also makes reference to “Mary, wife of George Kieft”, however her “son and heir” was named Richard Evans. This probably means that George was Mary’s second husband.
She married John Short, married 18 Jan 1781 in Instow, Devon, England, b. 21 Jun 1722 in Westleigh, Devon, England, resided in Instow, Devon, England.
Generation Two
2. George2 Kieft, (William1) b. 24 Feb 1742 in Westleigh, Devon, England, d. 1817, buried 11 Jan 1817, resided in Fremington, Devon, England.
There is a burial record listed in Braunton fo a George Kiff, d. 10 Jan 1817, aged either 83 or 63, which would make a birth of either 1734 or 1754. If this is he George of Fremington and he was 63 when he died, he would have been 27 at the time of his marriage to Mary Staddon. However, birth year of 1754 doesn’t match Westliegh records of 24 Feb 1742. George is the first Kieft to show up in Fremington records. There is no proof that his parents were ever in Fremington. This family seems to be the only Kiefts in Fremington into the 1800’s. George and brother, Samuel, both show up in the 1841 Census for Braunton, Devon. It seems as though other siblings probably stayed in Fremington.
Fremington Court records show a Mary Harris apprenticed to George in 1790, and a Grace Knill apprenticed to him in 1784.
He married Mary Staddon, married 24 Oct 1781 in Fremington, Devon, England.
Mary: There is reference to “Mary, wife of George” in Land Indenture in Fremington (* see notes for Rebecca, sister of George). In this record Richard Evans is listed as “son and heir” of John Evans, formerly of the Parish of Fremington, aforesaid yeoman deceased and Mary the wife of …George Kieft..”
